I am the director of Anatomy 390 (summer), 391 (winter) and 392. I also direct the lab component of RHSC 420 for Masters of Occupational Therapy students. My other responsibilities include teaching 1st and 2nd year medical and dental students in Gross Anatomy, Histology and Neuroanatomy labs.

Specification of neuronal identity during Drosophila nervous system development.

Molecular mechanisms underlying synapse formation, maintenance and elimination. Role of cell adhesion molecules at the synapse.

We are interested in understanding how the brain accomplishes memory. To do this, we combine cutting-edge experimental neuroscience, big data analysis, and computational modeling. We use this multidisciplinary approach to study memory in the brain across many different levels: molecules, neurons, neural circuits, and behaviour.

Medical Education
My background is in Cardiovascular Physiology. My research interests are in Medical Education and include Medical Student Admissions and Faculty Development.

Direct imaging of structural and functional plasticity in the intact and awake developing brain underlying normal growth and formation of dysfunctional neural networks leading to Autism, Schizophrenia and Epilepsy.

We seek to identify the processes that prevent damaged neurons from regenerating following brain or spinal cord injury. To do this, we use a multidisciplinary strategy combining cellular, molecular, and bioinformatic approaches together with tissue clearing and 3D imaging analyses. We are also interested in identifying the cells and circuits that are most critical for mediating functional improvements after spinal cord injury.

I teach the renal physiology components of CAPS 301, CAPS 423, and BMEG 350. I am also involved in teaching CAPS 303, a laboratory course in human physiology, and CAPS 430, an advanced laboratory course in physiology.

Molecular Signalling in Diabetes. We seek the fundamental causes of diabetes, the mechanism by which critical genes and acquired factors control pancreatic beta-cell survival and function.

In the Lab of Molecular and Cellular Medicine, we are combining both modern molecular and physiological techniques to develop innovative gene and cell therapy methods to treat diabetes.

Identifying the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying development of pancreatic diseases such as diabetes and pancreatic cancer.

I tutor in case-based learning and assist in the gross anatomy and neuroanatomy labs of the MD undergraduate program.

Understand how the endoplasmic reticulum contacts and communicates with other organelles through defining the molecules that mediate these contacts.

The lab investigates excitation-contraction coupling in muscle cells. We are particularly interested in the role of caveolae in cardiac muscle, and employ a combination of 3D imaging, contraction studies, and viral gene transfection to investigate normal and abnormal hearts.

Role of dystroglycan, a protein associated with several forms of muscular dystrophy, in the central nervous system. Molecular mechanisms underlying the dystroglycan-mediated targeting and polarization of proteins in glial cells.

Cell biology of autocrine motility factor and its receptor; caveolae/raft-dependent endocytosis; organelle biogenesis; tumor cell motility and pseudopodial protrusion.

Functional analysis of transmembrane and secreted Semaphorins in the developing nervous system. Examination of the mechanisms that underlie directed cellular motility.

Podocalyxin in Breast Cancer Progression. Solid Tumor Progression Research Unit. Regulation of BRCA1 in Sporadic Ovarian Cancer.

Integrin function in morphogenesis in the fly. My main scientific interest is in determining how cells come together to form complex structures and then, once formed, how such structures are maintained.
