New Link Discovered Between Obesity & Type 2 Diabetes

Jim Johnson, Assistant Professor in the Department of Cellular & Physiological Sciences and the Department of Surgery, is the senior author of this significant paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. “Using a powerful new technology called proteomics, we were the first to show that fats can dramatically reduce the levels of Carboxypeptidase E, thereby linking one of the most important diabetes risk factors to this important protein that controls beta-cell function and survival.”

Type 1 Diabetes Breakthrough

Timothy Kieffer, Professor in the Department of Cellular & Physiological Sciences, and his lab have discovered how to cure Type 1 diabetes in laboratory mice, by genetically engineering cells in the animal’s gut to produce insulin at meal times. The researchers altered K cells so that instead of producing glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide, they produced insulin.
