Transportation Coverage

Below are some responses to frequently asked questions about our transportation policy.

What is the Body Donation Program’s transportation policy?

The UBC Body Donation Program covers transportation costs up to $1,000 for each donor accepted into the program.

If transportation costs exceed $1,000, the donor’s estate or next of kin is responsible for the remaining amount.

This policy applies to all donors.

Does this mean families must pay $1,000?

No.

The program covers up to $1,000 of transportation costs.

Families are only responsible for any amount that exceeds $1,000.

For many donors located within the Lower Mainland and surrounding regions, transportation costs are typically fully covered under this amount.

Why has this policy changed?

Transportation costs have increased significantly in recent years due to the increased interest in body donation, as well as rising fuel costs and service expenses.

To ensure the long-term sustainability of the program and the respectful and ethical use of each body donation, the program now provides coverage up to a maximum of $1,000 per donor.

This approach allows the program to continue serving donors and supporting health professional education across British Columbia.

How much will transportation cost?

Transportation costs vary depending on:

  • Distance from Vancouver
  • Location of the body (hospital/care facility, home residence)
  • Season (higher winter costs due to highway hazards, closures)

The program works with a licensed transfer provider to coordinate transportation. If requested, staff can provide a general estimate based on your location. Below are a few examples:

Transfer LocationTransfer CostUBC CoversFamily Pays
Lower Mainland$200$200$0
Victoria/Nanaimo$1200$1000$200
Kelowna$1600$1000$600

What happens if transportation costs exceed $1,000?

If costs exceed $1,000:

  • The program will provide the family with an estimated cost
  • The family may choose to proceed and accept the cost
  • Alternatively, the family may choose to make other arrangements

If transportation costs apply, how are they paid?

Our partnered funeral home, Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Services, handles the billing of transportation costs.

Does this affect acceptance into the program?

No.

Acceptance into the Body Donation Program is determined based on medical and program criteria at the time of death.

Transportation coverage is separate from the acceptance process.
